End of 2022
Well, a year has gone by since we updated this page. Classes continue both at the Dojo and on zoom. So far we have not experienced any flue spread created by our practices. Closing down for the week after Xmas (whew) . I am very grateful for the opportunity to practice with all of you and for your support of our programs. I have learned alot this year and see great progress in all students. Still hoping to re start our "behind bars" classes and could use a committee formed for that purpose.

December 2021
Classes are going well both zoom and live dojo. The new space is working well and we are now able to do Jo/Bokken work.
Zoom classes
Mon - Sat 9am-10am.
General Dojo practice
Tuesday and Thursday 9-10am
Advanced (by appointment)
Mon and Wednesday  6:30-7:30pm
It is possible that Albany kids class may start up early 2022.

August 14th 2021
Members and supporters,
Our most recent plan is to reopen live classes in El Cerrito.
The City has offered us the A side of our old location at Castro Park Clubhouse.
The A side is larger and allows for Jo /Bokken practice.
We plan to open September 7th (tuesday)after the Labor Day weekend with classes 9-10am and 10-11am .
Refer to the group member email recently posted for more details. If you didn't get that email please contact.

Feb. 1st 2021
Well here we are almost a year in and we are now planning , hummmm , thinking, about  strategies for gradual opening of live training.
First draft:

Stage 1
Add 1 uke to zoom classes
Add additional uke if outdoors
Saturday open jo/bokken class outdoors

Stage 2

Locate facility and hold classes with 1-6 students and zoom
Masks most likely required for now

Stage 3

Locate facility and hold open classes (with zoom as well)
Masks most likely required for now

Offer
dedicated partner for entire class
Hand sanitizer

Lots of ideas and responces.
Some were directed to the group, some sub groups  and some to me .
Just to be clear, any stages past the first (1-2 uke with me and possible outdoor group) is likely to take months to implement .(think summer)
We will know a lot more by that time.
Here are some of my thoughts after deep dive into direct info.

In general , the vaccine does a good job of protecting or lessening the impact to the vaccinated but we still need to be careful about spreading to those not yet poked and those with weaker immune systems.

CDC

Can I still get Covid after vaccine?

“Despite vaccination, the risk remains that COVID infection can occur and be transmitted even between two individuals who are vaccinated,” Cohn echoes. “While the risk is lower without vaccination, an individual patient must weigh their tolerance for risk, given their increased chance of becoming infected with COVID.”

Will the COVID-19 vaccine prevent me from infecting others?
The answer is, we don't know.
Clinical trials of the Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna vaccines found that both do a good job preventing symptomatic COVID-19 disease, including severe COVID-19. However, the trials did not measure whether a person who is vaccinated is less likely to spread the virus to someone else.
Does the vaccine prevent spread?
Widespread vaccination for the coronavirus means that the virus will not infect as many people. This will limit spread through communities. Both Pfizer and Moderna report that their vaccines show approximately 95% efficacy at preventing both mild and severe symptoms of COVID-19.

Can a vaccinated person still transmit Covid 19?
Even if your loved one has been vaccinated, they could still become mildly infected. Remember, the clinical trials only looked at whether the vaccines prevent severe disease, not infection, so a vaccinated person could unknowingly pass the virus on to you and others.

The vaccine doesn't switch our normal lives back on, Dr. Saad Omer, director of the Yale Institute for Global Health.cautions. It's more like a dimmer switch. After two doses, "it's OK to socialize a little bit more, but it's not time for bingo night. It's not time for square dancing."

With a heavy Heart I announce the passing of Ota Sensei (Steve Ota)
A good friend for over 45 years and fellow traveler on this Ki Aikido path.
A gallant struggle with lung cancer and peace at last.

Small "live" classes can be organized by senior members as long as protocols are observed. Sensei is available at various times and days to assist.
10/4/2020
Oct 3rd "Live" class was cancelled due to high AQI.
Live @ memorial Park class will only occur if AQI is less than 100

10/01/2020
Folding mats (6' x 12') are available for loan or sale
They fold to 6'x2'x1'.  We will be using at least one of these in our Saturday "Live @ Memorial Park" classes for those who want to throw and/or fall. Remember, masks, wash hands and do not interact when symptomatic.
It also would be helpful , if in doubt, to takes ones temperature before attending.

What a great sat "live" class in the Park!
A good combination of members and new students. We will continue to hold these "live in the park weapons classes" on Saturdays at 1-2pm with extra practice for those members who want it as well. Live class will be cancelled when AQI is over 100.

Greetings all.
Close to 1/2 year of social distancing. Our zoom classes are going well and are even addressing some issues which were hard to see in live practice. Albany recreation is attempting to offer some outdoor live classes and we are going to test the waters with a Saturday afternoon Jo/Bokken class at Memorial Park. 1 - 2PM . This is in addition to the zoom Saturday morning class. All members are welcome to join/assist this class but it will be a very basic weapons handling and Jo 1 /Bokken 1 affair.
I would like to again thank all of our members for their continued support.

Greetings.
Well, we are going into the 5th month of “Shelter in Place”.
Zoom classes are going well and , I would say, are addressing some basic issues which we do not usually get to address in “normal” classes.
I would like to thank all of you for supporting our programs and ask for your continued support. Many of you are subscribers’ , others offer timely monthly donations, others occasional donations, as you are able. Still others may not be able to support financially but do so by attending zoom classes or just by spreading the theories of Soshu.

Hope all are doing well in this crazy uncertain time.

Although it has been suggested (and implemented) that our programs experiment with gradual in person , social distanced,  outdoors group classes ……….it is too soon (for me) and we do have our zoom classes. I am advising HQ of the same. It is too easy to fall back into old ways of instruction. When placed in very familiar circumstances like class or  visiting extended family it is often too easy to forget protocols and at present not worth the risk.
Check the this web site   www.kiaikido.org for supplemental instructional aids and updates.
stay healthy and positive ki,

sensei
 as promised:
1-note the jo. While a very dynamic throw ( and fun to boot!) this is an obvious sign of collision.
2- full commitment to attack
3- horizontal ikkyo tenkan
