Ki is a very wide concept and the word can have many meanings. No matter how small a particle is, it will never become nothing. The Ki we practice is not only in everyone, but in everything. Indeed, you can realize your Ki in many ways, not only through martial training or other disciplines. In this dojo, we are training to realize this Ki and our connection to everything through a method developed by Koichi Tohei Sensei. Tohei Sensei's method involves meditation, breathing training, balance and rhythm movements as well as martial arts. Surely, one could discover these things by one's self, but how many do? Tohei Sensei's teaching is not unique, but it is successful. His major contribution has been the realization that one's understanding of Ki can be tested by our balance and lack of collision under stress. One cannot say that their mind is calm and stable if their body is not also calm and stable. This is not a test of strength, but of understanding and commitment. The understanding Tohei Sensei talks about is not one of the "Brain," but of the whole spirit. Some very intelligent folks may have a weak spirit and vice versa. While Shin Shin Toitsu, translated as "mind (spirit) and body as one," is the name Tohei Sensei gives for our method of training, our goal is to become one with everything. This is not the only training dealing with mind and body coordination, but it has proved very positive and the most sucessful I have found for reaching anyone regardless of body or mind limitations. |
